So far….

Hello, ok don’t be so upset i know am 2 weeks late but am here now forgive me. So i know you want to know everything i have been up to, its being crazy this last 2 weeks. Anyway enough about my complains, let’s get to business i hope the links i dropped at the previous post helped to build you appetite for data science.

So now that your appetite is up let’s talk data science. Yes it is a male dominated area but girls rock at it too. Since i am a girl i had to find out what i needed to become a data scientist after watching so many youtube videos (channels: python programmer, siraj raval, Daniel bourke and Joma tech), one this was for sure i had to learn python programming. Python and R programming languages are the basic languages for data science.

Learning python programming took me about a month and a half, using a tutorial by Pramod the title of the course is to learn python programming step by step. In this his course he also not only teaches you python but also how to relate it to data science, web scraping and SQLite. The classes are quite easy to understand and if you get stuck there is always google and stack overflow to consult. I won’t lie there where times some error codes would almost frustrate me, but if you are determined to get it you will.

Thinking about it now I realize that I learnt quite a lot from Pramod. I got to understand the use of my system terminal apart from learning loops and functions in python I learnt to use programs such as BeautifulSoup. Ok am speaking Etsako (that’s my language of origin by the way) now right, what is BeautifulSoup you might ask. It is a file in the python library used for web scraping and web scraping is the extraction of data from a website, it is basically a mining process of collecting data worldwide.

We’ll get to talk more on that soon, so I promised that I would give an update on my progress with the Microsoft Data Science course am presently taking. The introduction of data science was quite interesting and you get to try your hand out with the labs attached to each class (the classes are handled by edx.org). I was given data to arrange, sort, analyse and many more I was able to finish that in 2 weeks basically because I already had some experience in excel manipulations but for someone else, it meant to take a bit longer time. But it’s very easy to understand although the last module of the introduction class was on machine learning. Now the machine learning totally kicked my butt and it’s still kicking my butt I haven’t really gotten a hang of it but I know soon I will. Started the next stage of the course though it’s Analysing and Visualising Data with Power BI (BI- Business Intelligence: it is the accumulation, analysis, reporting, budgeting & presentation of your business data. The aim of business intelligence for a business is to improve the visibility of its organisational operations and financial status to better manage your business.). By next post, I will have more to talk about this aspect of the course. Below are some pictures of me doing some tasks given in the various labs of the introduction course of Microsoft Data Science.

The project data was collected from a Lemonade business.

That’s all folks see you next week I’ll try not to be late with my next post. Remember every journey starts with a step get it 1 step at a time. See you next week.

Baby steps

Hi guys sorry for posting late this week has being eventful. So how was your week dataful I hope mine was, i have some really exciting news also. So let’s dive right in last time I told you about how i got hooked on DS and i promised you some material on the excel tutorials. I will get to that but first the pathway.

So I told you about the advert i saw on DS for women here is the link to there page https://gitgirl.co/ i was trying to apply for their scholarship. I could not finish their tasks so i did not get a full scholarship and i could not afford it even with the half scholarship i was given. But still i think if you can afford it is a good place to start. Below is a screenshot of their page its quite girly I know lol.

Gitgirls page

Anyway they gave me so really mind blowing tasks. if you love the feeling you get after solving a task or a problem trust me you are going to love DS. To tackle the tasks i was given free study material on Youtube which am going to also give you. You can try them out play with some data seriously its fun i practised alone with the tutorial. I got to understand what data was, types of data, the process of data analysis, statistics and so much more. I did not forget about the links:

This link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8EYEJ32oQ8&list=PLU5aQXLWR3_yYS0ZYRA-5g5YSSYLNZ6Mc gives you all you need to know about Descriptive statistics mean, mode , median the classes are given by Khan Academy. I got my hands dirty by following the instructions on this link:https://www.excel-easy.com/examples/descriptive-statistics.html

Still me

So many links I know but believe me when i say you would feel like a rock start when you done with all these tutorials, i know i did after all this i was hooked to DS. So i have been holding this in all through this writing its time for my big news drum roll please… Guess who started Microsoft Data Science course yes you guessed right me, i know you can’t see me but am doing m happy dance.

Don’t worry I keep you guys posted on my process through the course. Am so pumped up can’t wait to try out what I learn wish me luck. Ok times up see you guys next week remember every journey starts with a step get it 1 step at a time

HELLO

Hello am Jessica, whats you name ?. Welcome into my data science learning world, hmmm i can see the gear engines in you head turning lol. You thinking how can i be into data science, trust me am as shocked as you are but believe me when i say it’s not as difficult as you think to become a data scientist.

First i’ll start from the beginning how did data science find me. Been fresh out of university a young Nigerian looking into the labour market from the side lines and i wondered want do i really want to do with my life. I did not just want any job i wanted something that fascinated me and left me wanting more, i always loved computers and the IT world i think it i inherited it from my dad though he is a computer scientist.

Begin a computer scientist’s daughter always made me so proud so when he offered me a role at his firm i hopped at it with no second thought while waiting for National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) a compulsory service program to the country. Worked for a year as a customer relative office and once in awhile troubleshooting server problems that occurred found it interest that i could solve some issues by just switching the server off and on…lol i know you expected something huge. Well sometimes jus rebooting a server can save you a lot of heart aches.

After a year working for my dad i was called to serve by the NYSC and was posted to work in a school as a teacher assistance. Well that was something i had to do and get it over with, am not the most patient person in the world when it comes to children but i love them, funny right. Working there was not easy having to keep children in line is not an easy job i swear computers are so much easier to deal with, one weekend i came across an advert about data science for women. It said interested parties could i apply. Did not know what data science was about so i ran to my best friend Youtube (did i mention my obsession for youtube…its something else).

Watch so many videos about data science and took some short tutorial on it on youtube using excel for data analysis it was intriguing and thus i was hooked.

Thank you for reading so far amateur writer here but seriously thanks next week when i up load again I would take you through my first week learning data science on excel and i’ll drop some links to tutorials on youtube. who knows you might get hooked too. See you next week. Every journey starts with a step, 1 step at a time
